Our Winemaker

PJ Charteris

Born and raised near Wanaka, New Zealand, PJ has over two decades of winemaking experience in both Australia and New Zealand. He is also a senior wine show judge with experience in both regional and capital wine shows that spans over 20 years.

PJ is the Chairman of Judges at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show in Australia.

What sets PJ apart from other winemakers is his ability to craft wines of finesse and elegance while not trying to hide from the fruit weight and power naturally found in the wines of the region, as James Halliday puts it: “denying the bombastic notes that afflict many Central Otago Pinots”. These days PJ is regarded as producing some of the finest Pinot Noirs in NZ.

PJ was introduced to Michael Nock through the esteemed Michael Hill Smith MW, the world's first Master of Wine from Australia, renowned as both a wine producer and international wine judge. Hill Smith spoke highly of PJ, paving the way for their connection.

Although PJ spent many years in Australia's Hunter Valley, his heart remains rooted in Wanaka. With extensive experience crafting exceptional Central Otago Pinot Noirs, PJ enthusiastically accepted Nockie's Palette's invitation to collaborate on winemaking.

The partnership between PJ and Nockie's Palette commenced in 2021, focusing on crafting exquisite wines. The collaboration includes Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, drawing inspiration from the unique terroirs of Central Otago and North Otago.

With PJ's expertise and deep-rooted connection to the region, this collaboration promises to bring forth wines of exceptional quality, embodying the essence of these renowned New Zealand wine regions.
