Georgetown Vineyard carries a rich history, once serving as a mining settlement and believed to have been utilised by a local blacksmith over a century ago. A remnant of this bygone era, an old miners’ hut, still stands beside the picturesque Kawarau River on the property, situated near the Cromwell entrance of the Kawarau Gorge.

Georgetown Vineyard occupies a truly special site, distinguished by its unique location. The gentle yet consistent airflow through the gorge has provided remarkable protection against frost damage, making it one of the rare vineyards in Central Otago without the need for wind machines. The meticulous management of Georgetown Vineyard, with its close planting and precise care, adds to its allure.

Planted in 2002 by esteemed vintner Gary Andrus, the vineyard follows a Burgundian style with hobbit-sized vines. The densely packed planting scheme is believed to enhance the quality of the fruit. Andrus, reflecting on the vineyard, remarked, "It's the sort of postage-stamp lot that most people overlook. It has the same climate as Bannockburn, a premium area with a proven pedigree and great free-draining gravely soils."

The clay and river gravel soil composition, specifically the Molyneux sandy gravel layer, imparts a distinct character to the wines. Expect a fine, yet expansive palate with pronounced spice, mineral nuances, and savoury elements. The lengthy exposure to abundant sunshine blesses the Pinot Noir vines with vibrant energy, harnessed by every cell to foster growth.

The vineyard's care and management are entrusted to local viticulturists Tim Deaker and  Jason Thomson from Viticultura, ensuring meticulous attention to detail. As a certified member of SWNZ (Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand), Georgetown Vineyard upholds sustainable practices, marrying environmental stewardship with winemaking craftsmanship.
